Wizzy Has An 8D Vision

Wizzy is Obsessed with 8D

Wizzy has a vision of the 8th Dimension. Check it out starting in October over at the Rezzable Visions sim.

She is the first participant in our Visions series where we are giving over a sim to creative people to unleash something amazing and bold. Wizzy is setting the standard very high with this complex and exciting build.

Information and Ideas Behind the Build from the Artist:

What is the E8 Polytope?

A “Polytope” is a higher dimension polyhedron and the E8 Polytope lives in the 8th Dimension.

Our minds can't intuit what an eight-dimensional object looks like, but we can perceive its two and three-dimensional “shadows.” The shadows of the E8 are stunningly symmetrical and exceedingly beautiful. This is because the object encodes the Golden Ratio.

Why are we interested in the E8 Polytope?

The E8 seems to be an accurate geometric model for Everything - from snowflake, ice and crystal formation to predicting the behavior of sub-atomic particles. The E8 is used in String Theory and is used to predict particle behavior in the new CERN Hadron Super-Collider.

In March of 2007, Mathematicians form the American Institure of Mathematics (AIM) completed the five year project of mapping the E8.

Dr. Garrett Lisi's new Theory of Everything (Is this the long sought-after Unified Theory?) uses the geometry of the E8 to predict the behavior of ALL known particles, plus he predicts the discovery of twenty new particles.

Thanks to Desdemona Enfield for programming and scripting assistance with the E8 Polytope Project. Thanks to Talia Takugawa and Poid Mahovlich for their patience. Thanks to Glyph Graves, xenophile Neurocam and Nand Nerd for their support and assistance. Thanks to all my builder friends here in SL!

About the Aritst: Wizard Gynoid

Call me Wizzy

My friends caIl me Wizzy. So you can call me Wizzy.

You might say that I am obsessed by Sacred Geometry. I find Second Life to be the perfect place to obsess on Sacred Geometry and I spend a lot of time building Geometrical objects by hand. My Temple of Sacred Geometry is dedicated to these works and I find that some of my favorite artists and writers inspire me to build. Most notable of these are M.C. Escher, H.P. Lovecraft, William Gibson, Rudy Rucker and Neal Stephenson.

My RL training is in Philosophy, especially the History and Philosophy of Science. I was also a Business Major and in RL I am an artist.

My latest project is the Building of an 8th Dimensional object in SL. This was a daunting and difficult task and I had the help of a team of mathematicians and programmers.

The E8 Polytope is the most complex and elegantly symmetrical geometric object known to mathematicians. Inscribed within it, one can find all of the platonic solids and many other symmetrical polyhedra. The object has icosahedral symmetry.

When first rezzed into SL, the object had an incredible 3,000 prims. Subsequently we identified a lot of redundant and overlapping struts and removed those. The object now is a manageable 1,360 prims.

I am of the conviction that Second Life is a perfect place to demonstrate abstract mathematical objects in an easily intuited 3D environment. With that in mind, the E8 Polytope shown here has been demonstrated to astrophysicists at CalTech, physicists at Los Alamos National Laboratory, faculty and staff at the University of Michigan and the Whitman School of Management at Syracuse University.

I think I remember this from chemistry class, the way atoms rank/spin? Of course, I did not understand that completely back then, so not sure if it's the same. :D

Great interview, words and pictures cannot do this justice though and I urge you all to visit the Rezzable Visions sim and check this out. I must have accumulated several hours just staring at this thing in it's different forms.

p.s. good luck to any humans trying to get past this CAPTCHA system, sheesh, I'd be tempted to write something to decode that image so I can post this comment

I'm gonna have to go check it

I'm gonna have to go check it out... I still have a heck of a time fathoming what a tesseract looks like (I think that's the right term for it).

Nand, if you verify your SL account with the Rezzable website, you can skip the whole Captcha thing.  I've never had to use Captcha when I log in to the website.

Dr. Garrett Lisi (of the "Theory of Everything" fame) paid me a visit at the Rezzable Visions sim about noon SLT on October 1st, shortly after opening the sim to the public.

He was a n00b, but seemed to catch on surprisingly quickly.  I suppose this is not surprising because he is, after all, a physicist; which indicates a certain high degree of native aptitude.

It was my impression that Dr. Lisi was impressed and excited by this exhibit of the E8.  He had a lot of questions for me about the specific methods and requirements of building such a thing.  This gave me the idea that he might be considering spending some time in Second Life.

I asked him to feel welcome and to return again and I think he just might do that.

article about Doc Lisi from Telegraph: Surfer dude stuns physicists with theory of everything. "Some incredibly beautiful stuff falls out of Lisi's theory," adds David Ritz Finkelstein at the Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta. "This must be more than coincidence and he really is touching on something profound."

My sincerest thanks to my patron on this Rezzable Visions project - RightAsRain Rimbaud!  Yes indeed, Dr. Garrett Lisi paid us a second visit to the sim and hobnobbed with Hamlet Au and a few of us other hardcore geometers. And Hamlet Au published an interview at his NWN.

Dr. Lisi's presentation at TED is now available for viewing in its entirety here --> http://www.ted.com/index.php/talks/garrett_lisi_on_his_theory_of_everyth...

This presentation makes the theory almost understandable!

On October 23rd, SL's king of "Space" music performed LIVE at Rezzable Visions and I have posted some photos of that spacey event on Flickr here --> http://www.flickr.com/photos/wizzy_gynoid/sets/72157608348515446/

Sacred Geometry

Congratulations on your image of an E8 polytope. Best regards, Vincent
