Price Increase to Hit Full Sims Next?

Virtual World News reports comments from Linden Lab CEO Mark Kingdon on the void crisis:

"Openspaces were intended for empty areas of ocean and desert, allowing estate owners to add scenery and space to their estates, just as Linden void regions are used around the Mainland. Instead, the large majority of Openspaces are being used as more than simply space," Kingdon continued. "They have people living in them, building on them and generally using them as a cheaper version of normal regions. The increase will adjust the cost for this type of land to match the way in which it is actually used."

But...this is what people do on full sims? What commitment is there from Linden that the next announcement won't be to "jack-up" full sim prices (of course with 60 days notice).

So then we can expect the price of a full sim to increase by $195 per month then also? $390 per month tier on full sims coming next?

And please wtf is with the "we at Linden didn't know how people were using this voids" nonsense!!!! Linden 1) increased the voids from 1,750 to 3,750 to allow for more primmage 2) has been raking in massive dough for the last 6 months watching people convert full sims to voids for the rental market. 3) never once told anyone that there was a scaling meltdown or tried to fix it. 4) Lindens it is YOUR Platform how can people use your platform for ways in which you don't want it to be used--is anyone in charge over there?

Further, why can't Linden make announcements on their own website? The company is adding to concern by leaking their own news out across the blogsphere. Looks like the can't even get their own blog to work properely, but at least they could make an official statement about what people can do now.

  • Can people get refunds?
  • Will Linden reconsolidate voids back to full sims and eat all the charges?
  • What about the costs to rework sims back to full? Guess what the new sim is gonna be wiped.
  • Can people upgrade to full sims and credit their acquisition costs?
  • ...many more questions....

 Ordinal can't find sense in

Ordinal can't find sense in "void crisis" see latest post disecting the Linden logic-- "However, a flat increase is not an economic disincentive, as it has no relation to the level of use. In fact, if anything, it is an incentive to high usage - if one is paying more, one might as well use as many resources as one can, renting out extra parcels, adding in more temp rezzers and all that sort of thing. The only reduced level of use that would result from a flat increase is that some people might entirely abandon their OpenSpace areas, and so, certain folk might find that they were the only ones left sharing a CPU - at which point I suspect that they would be moved onto another more populated CPU and the old one used for some other purpose. A flat price increase will only ever reduce the overall number of areas."

So what does this imply? Either LInden is committing suicide and wants to destroy the existing grid (isn't that like Matrix 3?) or they are trying to destroy the void product all together and send the people who want a virtual life back to Mainland. Certainly sending people back to Mainland makes a little sense, except for the fact that Mainland is awful and is an even worse "user experience" than a laggy void sim.

So what is Linden really up to? Setting the stage for the mythical Class 6 price increase? Will that be ala Vista and force everyone up or out? Will that be a 66% price "jack-up" also?

A even more cynical person than I might think that Linden is trying to flush out the resident population and make the grid cleansed for enterprise and government users. But aren't there easier ways to separate these users out on the grid?????

Linden needs to step-up and make some clear statements about our future on their grid--or we can just assume there isn't gonna be one.

To be quite honest I cannot

To be quite honest I cannot work out why they are doing what they are, and I am not sure that there is a rational motive. I suspect that the conversation went something along the following lines:

Technical Lindens: "Argh, some people are really hammering these voids, we should do something."

...time passes...

Technical Lindens: "Look, really, we should do something."

Financial Linden: "Aha! Raise prices!"

Technical Lindens: "Eh? That's not going to help!"

Financial Linden: "Help? Help what? Raise prices! And you, Jack, you post about it and defend it inworld and in forum posts. People still like you because of the ad farms thing. You've still got a reputation that we can burn up here, like we did with Torley."

the lack of communication is frustrating

now I'm not sure why they keep seemingly trying to engage in self-sabotage, but a little bit of communication can go a long way if one actually articulates one's motives and plans. I suspect this situation might have also to do with the current financial crisis we're about to plunge into. though it hasn't yet hit the SL market, recession is on the faces of anyone who knows about the current state of the economy. in my opinion, this is the start of many price hikes, and not just in SL.

they also obviously underestimated their one-size-fits-all policy when adding more prims etc. and seem to be neglecting responsibility for their mistake. it's apparent we need a solution but this one seems largely half-baked. while trying to balance speedy fixes with thoughtful solutions, they made another error in having us take the fall for it. wrong answer: you never blame your customers for your mistakes. our low opinion of LL just keeps sinking as they continue to do this.

Linden Labs has a moral and financial obligation to communicate messages thoughtfully and clearly. the fact that we have not seen this in most of these near crisis situations is alarming and confusing. for me, the lack of communication is the most frustrating part of this entire issue. I don't mind a price hike, just give me a good reason to accept it, and don't put the blame on my shoulders. it's hard to swallow something when it's being thrust down your throat, especially when you don't know what it is or why.

well, that's my shtick.

Ha! Nice one, Miss Malaprop!

Ha! Nice one, Miss Malaprop! I could imagine the dialogue *did* go much like that. Are you registered at Open Life, yet? Perhaps that will be an incentive the Labs really need to get these issues in order. I won't give up any breath, but I do believe the time is finally at hand ... competition may give complacency a little bit of a run for its money, or maybe, a lot.

Obviously Lindens are not too concerned about the future of our grid and feel as they own it to do as they please.

Jack being the black sheep he is right now, has no clue to what is really going on and trying to patch up the holes as they appear. The Financial Linden gave him a collander and asked him to carry water to the fire. Good luck with that Jack me boy.

He has stated that they may look at offering a $0 conversion of four OpenSpace sims to a full sim as well as thinking about hard limits on number of scripts+agent limits etc but the story gets flakier as he tries to answer the many angered owners.

What I personally do not get is that how can a product be priced BEFORE knowing what needs to be done? How can anyone in any position within a company look at a problem product and say "Yupp, we will need to cost this at $125 a pop but I really don't know how we are going to fix this".

Needless to say, such questions do not get addressed anywhere. As soon as this was announced at the Linden blog, I knew something was fishy from the way it was worded. I completely agree with Ordinal and felt the same way how it must have taken place.

Yeah we all knew they were being overloaded, also we all knew that the branding of "OpenSpace" was a cover from day one to avoid owners from calling LL and asking for assistance because they simply did not want to be bothered to police these sims so simply said"Don't use them, they break easy" but put the price down and pumped the prim count so they would sell like hotcakes. Anyone remember what they were called before the Land Store 2.0 was opened this year? Yeah, "Low Prim Sim" or "High Area Sim", nothing about open or space or low performance. They were Class 4 back then with half the prim and nobody said anything about them not being capable of doing anything at all even though they performed worse than they do today.

We all knew most of that, but what we also should have known from LL's track record that they would stink up the grid and blame us for it.

Well done LackOfBusinessEthics Linden, you are a true example on earning consumer trust. I sure will shop here again.

Hamlet interviews spinmaster

Hamlet interviews spinmaster Kingdon on void crisis-- Says Kingdon: "Think about how much land mass has grown... so even with the added burden placed on the substantial [land] increase we've improved our stability... our customer ratings have been extraordinarily high.  I'd hope that all of the Residents look at the commitment we're making and the size and health of the in-world economy. "

But hasn't the "land mass" growth just been a charade? It is mainly due to the conversion of full to openspace sims--that are now being "jacked-up" in price because either Linden CANNOT manage them or it was a "bait-and-switch" move over the last 6 months.

And what "customer ratings"? Nice follow-up questioning there Hamlet... Is there a report on this? Which customers did they interview? Who do they even consider to be a customer? When was this survey done?

from Jack LInden's last post about this mess: "And we’re not saying that everyone is abusing resources." But Linden is saying that everyone should pay for it.

We are very distressed to see how Linden is operating. We are reducing our monthly payments to Linden Lab as rapildy as possible. We are removing all the void sims (6 total). We are deleting full sims (Cannery and Dump going 04 Nov). We had already stopped using the Classifieds (it was a waste of money anyway). We dropped all premium accounts (glad to see Linden doesn't care about them 80,000 x $USD7.5/month). We wll pull all our sims off the inwold search listings. We will kill all our unneeded groups. I suppose we will remove even more sims from the grid in the next month.

Any other ideas on how to minimize payments to Linden Lab?

That is the answer to the

That is the answer to the issues and complaints.. "We will create a new product" ?

Linden fixed nothing. Nothing. And to top it off they make themselves look even more the dumb ass. How in the world can they claim that this is a fix? They created a product. They named the product. They set the price to 75USD for 1800 prim. They upped the prim count to 3750.

THEN THEY TELL YOU THAT YOU OVER USED THE SERVICE AND CONTINUE TO DO SO!

This is complete insanity. If this is the best business minds coming out of college these days I would suggest they all go back to the drawing board. They are lying, cheating, manipulating, and continue to defraud people. The fact is simple. The product ALLOWED 3750 prims usage! The more prim, the more scripts, the more content, the more avatars visiting. And Linden of course knows this. But they still in the new blog announcement maintain that avatars are acceptive of the fact that the service was OVER USED.  BULLSHIT. The service was not over used unless the avatars used MORE > than 3,750 prims for US75.00 per month.

There was nothing but VOID ocean sims. If you wanted them, you had to pay for 4 and be an island disk size space leaser. Then Linden created the new Ocean Space area with 1800 prim, then upped the prim, then upped the price.

The message is clear. Linden Lab has not a single intention of keeping to their end of the agreements. They hide behind their own TOS when it benifits them and continue to eliminate the TOS when it benefits the consumer. This is a scam. Plain and simple and anyone believing anything otherwise is gullible and nieve.

pefectly said,

this smells very sticky. Anonymous i think you hit the nail right on the head.

paying more

if you think about it. Anytime you pay more for something you will use as much of that resource as possible.

Right as rain makes a comment where are the customer survey's. The answer is there are probably not any. There is something scammy going on here. Im sure it will come out

I would expect a price increase as all points are pointing in that direction
