Secondlife CEO Kingdon on current state of SL: "The third wave is now where consumers find the experiences that are most relevant to them, like live music, or participating in groups with common interest. Also, we are seeing businesses re-enter Second Life with a focus on collaboration, learning and product development. We’ve been through substantial expansion as a platform." Full Venture Beat interview here.

Virtual Worlds will
Mon, 09/22/2008 - 11:39 — RightAsRain RimbaudVirtual Worlds will disappear? From Silicon.com, Naked CIO (oooo that is rough image-buy some clothes dude): "I have also been sceptical of Second Life as a strong business commerce, marketing and sales platform - and believe I have been proven right as it has evolved into a much more juvenile application for interaction." He is right on that one for sure. We also think that "virtual worlds" will become more more part of the larger web and not stand alone--this is the idea of the 3D web. Question still is will SL disappear? Well, LL is making money and spinning a rosey enough picture. Seems like they logged onto to some other platform.
Anyway, we posted a list about what serious enterprises might need in SL -- 6 weeks ago. No comments from LL (er...not that we expected any, but their competitors have been reading that page).
Nice article from Mitch on
Mon, 09/22/2008 - 11:54 — RightAsRain RimbaudNice article from Mitch on Tech Web recapping SL opportunities/isssues: Second Life Tries for a Second Act . According to Mitch: "Kingdon must grapple with a number of problems: Making Second Life simple enough for most Internet users to get into it, improving stability of the very buggy service, streamlining the user interface, and dealing with a corporate culture that's often more interested in mystical vision than the hard job of running a business. "
I think the experience from former Cisco SL champion also are spot-on (we say that here in UK): "They have six islands and 1,000 employees in Second Life. But despite the size of the investment, Renaud said he found it difficult to get support from Linden Lab or find someone to talk to."
Acutally a good question to Mark Kingdon would be: "So who are your customers?" IBM? Universities buying cheap sims? Porno areas? Maybe I will ask that one at the Virtual Worlds conference here in London in a few weeks?
